So for our solo ensemble (on the 18th) we have a time limit of 5 minutes and obviously that is causing some problems. My teacher and I were trying to figure out places to cuts and we just couldn't get many that make sense musically.. we might have gotten a minute out, but may not even that..

I guess the best way to show what I have already cut will help..
In her performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCmzcn4MYuY&feature=channel_page
From 1:47-3:03 is cut out, and from 1:49-4:36 (the exact same part is repeated, I take out what is inbetween)

We timed it with a little bit more after 1:47 (till the end of that phrase to 3:03) and it was 5 minutes in the middle of the Cadenza..

My teacher says I will probably just have to play with knowing that I will get stopped after not finishing.. I think thats probably the only solution but that really bothers me knowing I will be stopped. I'm afraid I wont hear them.. lol. Its kinda bad but I somewhat zone out while performing and so I really don't know if I would notice! I do know for a fact it will REALLY bother me

Any tips/opinions etc??

Is it the Chaminade Flute Concertino that was written for flute students of Chaminades... if it is the peice is hopeless ... its a gorgeous peice but you need more that five minutes... i think you should just find a peice that is shorter... makes sense

Golden flute, I wish!! But I doubt it, lol. I wish they had like a permission to not have a time limit.. they should cause that song is impossible to make any cuts to!

I guess I'm just going to have to play it with the cuts I have and stop when they tell me to.. that definitely will make me more nervous going in there knowing that though :-/

I know another girl in my band played this song two years ago so I am going to ask her if she knows where the had cuts.. my flute teacher hasn't had anyone do it for a while so she couldn't remember where others had cut it.

And choosing another piece isn't an option, lol. I have a week and a day.. At least I was lucky with my piccolo solo cause it was super easy to make cuts to..

I never got through the whole piece in any of those honor band auditions in high school. They aren't trying to make you nervous, they really want you to do well. It's just that they need to keep things moving because a lot of people go to these sorts of things and nobody wants to be there until midnight. Don't let it bother you, they probably would want to hear it to the end as much as you want to play it, but there just isn't time for everyone to play for so long. Just relax, breathe and play music. If they have to get you out of your musical daze while you are playing to get you to stop, then that will probably just signal to them that you are really playing the music! I can't see that as being a bad thing = ). Good luck!
