We`ll everyone seems to like Yamaha, personally i HATE yamaha. I mean they make all kinds of other things besides flute. Gemeinhardt is good, Powell,Armstrong, but my fav. is Emerson. Im getting a hand made solid sterling silver open holed Emerson flute, with a low b foot, gizmo key, and gold lip plate the best place to research flutes or buy one, is www.fluteworld.com, check it out, it rocks!

I HIGHLY recommend Yamaha, for any flute/piccolo. In response to the previous reply, just because they make other products doesn`t mean the quality is worse. Some brands like Armstrong and Emerson, which are specialists in the flute area aren`t that...well...special. So I would definatley go with Gemeinhardt or Yamaha. I have a Yamaha Allegro open-hole flute with low B foot, open holes, and gizmo key in addition to my silver Gemeinhardt picc!

ok, I got my opened hole flute...a while ago..and I practiced on it...the switch wasn`t bad...pretty easy for me. Then, I wanted to try my old closed holed flute to see if there was a difference. Oh My Gosh...there is!...haha.
Opened--->lighter, which makes the sounds prettier.
closed--->kinda bulky, and just not as pretty.

i am an ametuer professional flutist. my flute is a pearl 765 french, pointed keys, all silver, nice headjoint etc. etc. etc. anyway, the french flutes will give you a better tone becuase they are slightly different from the student models. the range is higher, depending on your headjoint, it can help with your playing. i got my professional flute as a sophomore in high school. if you are serious about flute, i would recommend stepping up.

If you want a "real flute" then expect to pay $7,000 and up! If do not, then settle with "studendt" model. I`m really serious.

ive been playing on an open hole flute ever since i started.once you get used to it you can play on a closed hole flute again and still have a good sound.but to be the best,i say use an open-holed flute.

It also depends on the style, for instance, in Salsa those guys play way up in the 3rd and 4th octaves usually with closed keys. The greatest flutist ever lived, as considered by many, Marcel Moyse played a Couesnon closed hole made with silver alloy. He was a teacher for J.P.Rampal among many other notable flutists.

They help your fingering loadz. i used to play a closed hole flute, and i don`t think my hand position was that great; now i play an open hole i have to cover the holes, so it`s much better

Sonare flutes (made by Powell) are REALLY good! They`re not "real"/professional, but they do have open holes and low B foot.

No they don`t. Your hand position was probably fine if you could play quickly and smoothly with ease and without pain. Whether or not you had your fingers on the centres of the keys is irrelevant.
Open holes encourage Repetitive Strain in certain people, me included.

You are just asking for carpal tunnel and more more finger problems later on.

I play on an open hole flute, but plug the holes sometimes.
