I would never recommend a Trevor James. They are junk. Go for a Yamaha.

Does getting a good headjoint really help then?If you got a good student flute and then put on a solid silver headjoint, would it take you quite far?

The models mentioned are all an improvement on those old Boosey & Hawkes flutes. Personally I'd go for a Yamaha or Pearl but there are much worse instruments than modern Trevor James ones.

Hi again!
I've found out that I can afford a Trevor James Privilege flute! This is a silver plated flute with French arms on the keys, but the lip plate is .925 solid silver! This is a wonderful flute, but I need help! I can get it closed or open holed. There's barely anything in it price-wise, so I just need to know which is better and more suited to me. I'm 12, and i'm taking grade 4, and my flute just won't make it! I need to know whether to get it open or closed holed! Please help! And thank you for your advice on the brands, they helped a lot!

Why are you only interested in Trevor James line of flutes? They don't have a good track record as far as I have seen. A student Yamaha will outplay any of the Trevor James models any day! That is just stupid to make a decicion on any model of flute by asking in a forum and not bothering to play test many models first. I suppose it could be worse, you could always go for a Gemeinhardt.

Actually, I've tried 2 Trevor James Flutes, 2 Yamaha's, 1 Jupiter, 1 Pearl and an Altus! I found that the Trevor James flutes produced a warm, rich, clear tone which none of the others had. I found the Yamaha flutes sounded metallic and nasal, almost! Jupiter, I've established are not good at all! Pearl was ok, and had a nice feel to it, but the tone wasn't as good. And the Altus was better than the Pearl, but just didn't have the warmth and playability that the Trevor James flutes had! I have considered all my options! I needed to know that it was a good quality flute and that it wouldn't fall apart a week after I bought it!

Jupiter flutes are very nice and I would rank them way above a Trevor James. Trevor James flutes are not to popular in the US for a good reason.

I was close to buying one of those Trevor James flutes a few years ago and I had the advise of a professional player, who had tested it at the shop and recommended it. Finally I did not, mostly because I doubted about the reliability of the instrument that (I believed) was manufactured in Taiwan.

I chose Yamaha, though at a higher price.

"Remember that just because a headjoint is solid silver, it will automatically sound good. "

You've got your facts wrong. There are many crappy solid silver hj out there and there are many plated hj which sounds many times better than them.

Get your facts straight please.

I think theflutist94 didn't mean to say that. He/she probably forgot to put the "not" based on the context of his post.

Canadian I think if you pay close attention to flautist's post you'll notice there was a typo.

He says:
"Remember that just because a headjoint is solid silver, it will automatically sound good."
but then says:
"It's mostly the cut of the embouchure hole that affects the sound."

Leading me to believe that there was a grammar error in the first sentence where it should have read, "Remember that just because a headjoint is solid silver, does not mean it will automatically sound good."

Thank you for all your help and suggestions!
After taking what you all said on board, I have decided that I will look for something else! Either a Yamaha, or a Pearl!
Thanks Guys!

Well don't just limit your choices to those two brands....

Try everything in your price range. Yamaha and Pearl are probably the most well known flute brands but may not necessarily be the best kind of flutes for you.
