Thanks Kate, I don't know why many great teachers liked to teach me, I guess maybe they like dedicated students instead of talented lazy players who doesn't practise the foundamentals.

Good teachers and old teachers can immediately spot the dedication from students. I practise 3 hours a day on scales, and Sir.Galway suggested Marcel Moyse daily exercises and Trevor Wye's 6th exercise books, and then 1 hour on pieces.

Sir Galway told us many years ago in Shanghai masterclass that he practised scales and exercises 3 hours a day! This built up his success on fingering and techniques and fundamentals. "Scales are very important".

Yes, you are right, I am lacking musicality in my playing, Patrick also told me the same during his lesson and on facebook lessons. This is because in Asia, people train heavily on techniques (and tone) before 20 yrs old, after 20 they will go to Europe and start to learn classical music, those who do not have money to go to Europe will never play music well. But Western world would generally train heavily on musicality but didn't train technique as hard as Asians, when they reach 20, they have so much music to express in their mind, but many of them lack the technique/fundamentals to express what is in their mind.

But Trevor Wye said, we should try to acquire all the technique by 16, then move on to musical side with ease. This was my original planning, 16 (Im 15 now), but Patrick told me to think music now. Yes, I think I should also focus more on music (maybe half time on technique and half time on music), thank you for pointing out to me all the time.

Perhaps the lazy players are lazy for a reason. You have to consider that not everyone takes the flute seriously and just play for fun. Those type of people usually don't bother with lessons as they would be wasting a teachers time if they didn't practice. I am completely lazy myself when it comes to flute! I used to love to play, but now I have different hobbies and daily tasks that are more important to me in life that fill up a lot of my time. It happens when you reach adult hood I'm afraid I have no intentions on pursing the flute any further. So yup, I am one of the lazy one's, and I am happy that way! Even through my laziness, I continue to be called back for jobs to play flute. Go figure! Life is good

I take it that this response was to someone else, as I have never pointed that out to you. I would just do what your teachers recommend. They probably know best.

Good luck to you in your pursuit of happiness with the flute!

LOL. Pyrioni and Kate, that "lazy talented player" would be me. I don't plan on being a music major so I practice as much as I can, but sadly not enough. Too busy w/ academic, ugh. And it's worse enough I started a lot later than other flutists. :/ But Pyrioni is right w/ the whole Asia v. Western World thing. The West has been far longer acquainted w/ classical music than Asia. Thus, many people seek countries such as Germany or Russia to get really serious w/ the music business. But it's a toughy. Especially in Russia. You'd be ripped apart! Glad, I'm just playing music for fun... Oh trust me, my piano teacher is Russian.

Also, suzie, I am very jealous of Zachary Kellogg, lol. He has such a cool headjoint! I also heard his piccolo improvs. He is truly a genius. And his teacher is Jim Walker.

<Added>

But I do have oisagree w/ Pyrioni about the Western world lacking technique...well, I will say a lot do but the Russian piano method or at least what I learned is a whole 'nother thing. My technique + my musicality is one improved a lot b/c we don't separate the two, we put them together all the time. The scales have to be fast, light, etc but they also have to be MUSIC. The etudes, are all tiny little pieces focusing on several difficult techniques put together. Personally, I like this approach better but the approach you are learning isn't bad either, whatever works.

Pyrioni, while Micron may be able to justify your actions by blaming it on your nationality, I can not and will not.
How conceited of you to go on all about yourself in such a manor on a public forum. When someone is so defensive and brags on a daily basis such as yourself only concludes that they are very insecure with themselves. By the age of 15 from being around all these high and almighty flutists as you say you have been, then surely by now you would know how to conduct yourself. I don't see too many people flooding youtube with endless amounts of them playing the flute either. What do you think you have to prove? Simply pathetic!

Yes Spark, a good percentage of flutist play for fun and are not out to impress anyone. I guess most people have a life and their whole existence doesn't revolve around a piece of metal!

Binx.. you have sumed it up beautifully, well said.

His little ego must be bursting mixing with all those famous players,,but then he is a master at everything to do with the flute.
Yep, pathetic, how long have we to put up with this ego trip of his?

As long as he breaths most likely! It is clear that the moderator isn't checking all the thumbs down posts. There is obviously a problem if his posts are all being thumbs down. He has already been kicked off of one group. So he comes here and now we have to endure his ego trip.

Pyrioni,

One day, you will realize that music is not simply the sum of its parts. It is not simply a series of pitches played at specific times. To play music is to make the thoughts and feelings of long-dead composers live again. To play music is to express your own thoughts and feelings within a framework of notes. If you play without any feeling, you are doing the composer, your audience, and yourself a great disservice.

If people only wanted to hear the notes played correctly, they could just as easily enter everything into a program such as Finale or Sibelius and listen to the result. However, as one of my friends has proven time and time again, it will sound horrible! It's exactly what is written, down to every detail. It's technically perfect. It's all wrong and not meant for proper listening.

If you play without any emotion, no one will want to listen to you. Your videos are a novelty because you are young. If you can't move anyone to tears or laughter solely on the merit of the music you produce, no one will buy tickets to hear you play. Accuracy of notes is important, but correctly playing little blobs of ink on a page is not why people are passionate about music.

The flute is such a gorgeous instrument, and there is so much beautiful music written for it. Relax and embrace that beauty. The notes will follow, and you'll be a much happier and less-insecure person. You seem quite unhappy, and I hope that music can lighten your heart and make you less disagreeable.

Binx and Co, you're a bunch of low-grade trolls at this point. I've seen much better on other forums.
