I'm trying to get started teaching the flute, among other woodwind instruments. I'm only planning on teaching the flute for beginning and intermediate students, since I'm not as familiar with it as other instruments. One thing I'm trying to do right now is get together a good list of repertoire for each instrument. Can anybody give me some ideas of intermediate and advanced repertoire? Thanks!

If you're not that familiar with the flute, why are you teaching it?

I'm familiar with the flute, just not all of the repertoire. I just haven't had the amount of instruction on it that I have had with the oboe and some other instruments. I have played and performed on the flute for almost as long as I have played the oboe, and I have taught flute lessons in the past with good results. I am always striving to learn how to be a better teacher, which currently includes my project of compiling a list of repertoire for each instrument.

This seemed like a nicer forum than some, I was hoping for some constructive comments. Does anyone else have anything helpful to say? Thanks in advance to all who have useful advice!

Here is a list of 246 pieces in order of difficulty.

I've played many of the Level 7 pieces, yet I don't feel I'm qualified to teach flute.

Thanks! It's nice to have a good list, and I'm glad to see a lot of pieces that I've played on there.

I think part of feeling qualified to teach a certain instrument has a little bit to do with whether you feel qualified to teach anything. I'm mainly focusing on piano, oboe, bassoon, and clarinet, but I'm offering flute and saxophone on a beginning-intermediate level as well. I know from past experience that I can help a beginning flute student get past a lot of the common problems and become a better player, but I also know that I would have no idea what to do with an advanced student. I know my limits, and I will make sure that any prospective flute (or saxophone) student does too. There are very few woodwind teachers in the area, and I would like to do what I can to get the young students started off well.

Wonder if you or anyone else has heard Sariaaho's solo flute piece?

I find it really beautiful and heavenly.

I'd love to be able to play that one day. Not today though - I'm drinking a peppermint tea lol.
