I like Jason's list but would also add Mozart's Concerto in G, and the Flute and Harp Concerto. Have performed both with an orchestra.

While of course there are no "best" pieces for flute, everyone is entitled to personal favorites!

I would have to agree with everything that's already been said, and add the Chaminade Concertina, the Barber Canzone, the Sonata by Poulenc.

I've also enjoyed playing the Bach partita for flute, as well as the Handel sonatas.

Maturity as a musician comes when one begins to talk about "pieces" or "works" -- rather than "songs."
