Marching band seasons right around the corner and my band teacher convinced me to play piccolo(formerly alto player)if I don't get drum major. My private teacher doesn't play pic. so she doesn't know a whole lot about them but I was told pearl and yamaha have good ones for decent prices. My price range is mabey a little over a thousand. Oh and before I 4get I want to thank everyone who gave me advice one my last forum, I settled on a yamaha 381.

I have played Jupiter for a few years and they are really good. I suggest a wooden bore because it gives the piccolo a richer sound. Wooden bundys are also pretty good. Yamaha I thought is a good concert pic but I didn't like the tone for marching. I have both a Jupiter DiMedici with the grenadilla wood and metal head joint and peices and a plastic bundy for sale if you are interested in trying either of those out.

Please DO NOT use a wood piccolo for marching. Wood pics are generally more expensive and, depending on your local climate, are not for playing in a marching band setting without a far greater possibility of something bad happening to it.

If you play piccolo in marching band, please use a metal or synthetic body for outdoor usage.

The Pearl was designed to have great sound and performance and not be affected adversely by playing it outside. Grenaditte, unlike wood, is a synthetic material unaffected by climate.

I second the recommendation for using a pearl piccolo, it really is a wonderful instrument. I play on it as my primary piccolo, and it's always been very reliable and it's much less expensive than models of comparable quality.

Sorry, they are correct. I live in a climate where rain and other factors aren't an issue so wooden piccolos are fine. I didn't take into account that you may live somewhere that climate could impact your instrument. I am truly sorry. I would agree with them then. Pearl is a good sounding piccolo.
