What do you think of Armstrong flutes?? I`m saving up for one and I found an open-hole flute for $1200. Is that a good deal?

Flutes are very expensive! I`ve never had enough money to own one of my own, but I have heard that Armstrong is a very nice type of flute. I think that if that`s relly what you want then go for it!

The Armstrong open-hole I have has a very good tone. So yeah, at least based on my experience, Armstrong appears to be a fairly good brand (though mine apparently has a high silver content-I`m not sure what the model you`re looking at has, and that may effect the sound).

As I understand it, Gemeinhardt and Armstrong are basically the same company but in general flute people seem to regard Gemeinhardts as being of higher caliber--other people can`t tell the difference. I really can`t say having only played on my boyfriend`s younger brother`s Emerson closed-hole and my Gemeinhardt open-hole. (Regardless of who plays them, the Gemeinhardt sounds better- I think that`s the difference between solid silver on all parts and nickle-plated brass.)

As for ranking brands, I have seen many contradictory heirarchies on various personal websites and other flute forums. Pearls are supposed to be really nice, but to get the features you want you`d have to go beyond your indicated price range I think. I have seen a lot of people rank Yamahas as the best, Gemeinhardts as a close second and Armstrong coming in next.

Seeing as I`m just repeating information from others, the best bet for you is to try out lots of brands and see what works. What do you have now? I assume you are looking for an upgrade to what you already play.

As for the price range, my Gemeinhardt is open holed, solid silver, has a B-foot and a gold lip plate and cost under $400 used. If you are going to buy that Armstrong new, it sounds like you`d be paying manufacturer`s list retail price and you may want to shop around to see if you can get a better deal somewhere.

Good luck!

My flute teacher says that armstrongs are like a volkswagon bug dressed as a cadillac. Meaning they dress em up to look nice but theyre basically crap

If you want a chance to try a few different flutes, order from Woodwinds and Brasswinds (they have a website). They`ll send you up to 3 at a time, and you can try them out, compare them for two weeks, and then send the ones you don`t want back.

She recommended a pearl or yamaha, by the way. And try Fluteworld.com, they dont sell Armstrong flutes but they do sell Gemeinhardts and they are a lot cheaper then what you might find at another place. I personally own a gemeinhardt but since I bought it used and payed very little it wasn`t that great, but its gotten me through 5 years of band so Im not complaining.
