ive heard ppl talking abbout first chair postitions in the orchestra but i dont really know wat it is...can someone proveide a brief explination??

It`s essentially the best player in the orchestra/band/symphony for that given instrument (of course, there are lots of politics that go into it too).

Usually the audience can see the first chair person better than the others.

Also, depending on the set up of the instruments, the first chair flute or oboe will be the instrument that everyone else tunes theirs to.

So, it`s a status symbol of ability, it also can come with added responsibility- some books aimed at band directors suggest that the first chair flutist check the location of other people`s corks to make sure the lower chair instruments will play in tune.

just an addition, the first flute is also the one who is heard best by the audience, of the flutes that is and definately more politics go into it than ability - nice call

prob is, my orch conductor doesnt say anything!loL!

theres 1st row and 2nd row, first part is usually harder and higher than second and there is only one first flute, then 2nd etc but more than one person plays first flute music

i was refering to the music is harder etc... just to make sure you got that

in our band the 1st chair flute is the person that plays our piccolo, and everything else everyone else has said
