I have a great teacher and the same thing happened last year. I was in 8th grade and a 7th grader was put ahead of me, ahead of everyone, even though she cannot play very well. I really didn`t care, chairs don`t matter to me anyways so...
Good luck!

It sounds to me that you may think that just because a musician sets in the first chair they are the best. It takes just as much talent to play second or third seat. Your timing has to be more accurate. First chair usually has the melody, hence once you have the melody down your reading skills are not as challenged. So you see you may not have such a bad teacher after all. You may not be correct in assuming that the teacher has placed you according to your abilities. We all need to be challenged in every range . It can be very difficult to play the lowest range if you are always playing the higher range. So get over the "I am better than her" attitude it is very unbecoming we are to be musicians that suport one anothers talents. A trio can not do it alone. A band doesn`t solo. This is music not a pool game!

the same thing happens with our band(i`m in the top band)but our teacher tests us every 2 or 3 weeks, at the beginning of the year 3 or 4 7th graders were placed higher than me(from the test he gave us at the end of the year before) and he didnt retest us untill the 5 or 6 week of school. so i sort of know how you feel, try asking your teacher if he could retest the flutes. it just might work.
