Hey, im 14 and did grade 8 flute a year ago and obviously, dont want2 switch, however, flute sounds really great over the top of a latin Jazz band...
Hubert Laws is brilliant and the flute sounds like a really natural jazzy instrument... brilliant!
Check out flute bylaws or the Laws of jazz-great stuff!

dude, there is no age limit! it`s all about your appreciation for the music! most jazz players actually are really well trained classical musicians, so you might want to at least know some music theory and rhythm stuff. personally i think that jazz flute is a bit shrill. but Jeff Coffin is amazing. (he`s sax, flute and anyother wind instrument out there!)
i did ask my teacher once to help me w/ jazz and since she is a strictly classical player, it`s something that is hard for her. but i did manage to squeeze the Blues` scale out of her! she`s really awesome at jazz at one o`clock in the morning after a few drinks. but i wouldn`t advise this! dude, e-mail me back if you want to talk about this jazz thing. my friends are jazz crazy. what they tell me (and i quote, from a song i`m guessing): you can`t hold no groove...if you ain`t got no pockets
