The best way to choose a flute is to go into music shops and try out different models and pick one that you are comfortable with. Stay with Pearl, Jupiter, Armstrong, Selmer, Emerson, Gemeinhardt, or Yamaha. These are name brands that you can find someone to work on when the flute you chooses needs adjusting, overhauled, or just new pads. I would start off with a closed hole model and has you get better move up. There are nickel plated, silver plated, and sterling silver. If cost is a problem---have your parents look into it, but I have gotten some very good deals off of E-bay ( all of my flutes came off of there and the most I have spent is $650 for a flute worth about $1800 in new condition ). Also look into buying a used flute if you are not sure if you are going to stick with it ( with my Gemenhardt 3B, daddy spent over $900 on this flute, I got it for $210 ). Good Luck

Pearl and Yamaha are really good brands... Yamaha can be quite pricey but it`s worth the money. DO NOT GET A JUPITER! Anything made in asia is bound to be trouble.(band director`s always tell ppl that) Try fluteworld.com you get discounts on instruments and a free trial period. good luck

Gemindharts are the best! My favorite flute is a gemindhart. It sounds beautifull and plays beautifully. I do agree with the person who recomended a closed-hole flute for beginners, though.

Notice how everyone`s opinions vary. . . While I would personally NEVER play a Gemeinhardt, they are very respectable and popular instruments. It is a matter of personal preference. Buy a well-known brand, and play on several models before you choose your favorite.

I just bought my flute recently. A beginner Trevor J James. It`s good! Anyone tried it before. While shopping around, i tried a new Pearl open hole inline flute, it`s spoilt. Therefore my opinion on Pearl isn`t that good.

you need to start with a beginner flute w/ only one gismo (little rolly thing on foot joint) go to your local music store and tell them you want to rent a beginner flute w/ one giismo and it may seem like a high price but its normal. also try to get a package where as long as you are renting it you get free repairs and you can eventually trade it in
