I just got a flute yesterday and I can hardly make any sound on it. I got the beginner book (im a fast learner) and it starts on F... well it takes a lot of effort and moving of my embochure to get an F. C is alright, but thats about the only easy note I`ve found. Any tips? I play Clarinet, Sax, and Mellophone too-could that be the problem?

You mouth might not be in the right position and you might not be blowing the right way.it also very hard to go from a reed instrument to a flute (trust me past experience). It just takes time and pratice and the right fingering.

I don`t play any other instruments but I`ll tell you right now...
I used to play clarinet and it is WAY different than the flute
Don`t expect to learn the instrument overnight, you`ll just get frustrated.
If you have enough money, just take a few priate lessons so you can learn the basics (mainly breath support and your mouth, posture ect.)
I know everyone isn`t made of money (especially me lol) but if you can talk to a friend that knows how to play flute, ask them. ^_^
If you need more help just email me and I`ll do the best I can!

I might be able to help. I started off playing the clarinet. I then went to playing the sax and I am trying to learn the melophone from a friend in school. It is only a little different. Basically just try to move your mouth until you get your note. I started by just useing the head piece and when I got that note I put the rest together and went from there. With that method I went through the first book and half of the second book within the firs year that I was playing. if you have any further questions feel free to e mail me. please use flute advice or something similar in the topic please.

I should have added that I was @ it for about 2 hours that night. Sorry. But Yeah by the end of the night I was 8 pages into the first book. But it also helps that you know how to read music first.

My first week as a flute player was on the headjoint only. I `got` to practice bringing it up to my lip in the right position to make a sound. Getting a sound with the headjoint is much easier because you have a smaller thing to adjust. If you`re struggling, you can try using the headjoint alone, and rotating it until you find a position that is easier to play in.
Good luck,

The only brand I can think of right now (and it`s morning, so bear with me, lol) is Armstrong. I`ve never played one before, but I`ve heard they`re fairly decent.
A few others mentioned using only the headjoint at first, and that`s really good advice, since all it requires for a sound is the correct embouchure. One of the hard things of flute is the amount of air it takes. That could be your problem... maybe you`re not putting enough air in? I don`t play the clarinet, but I`ve always heard it`s about the air pressure more than the air amount. So perhaps you`re thinking of it backwards?
Try starting at C, and go down to the B below it, rather than F. C, B, and Bb have always seemed to me to be the easiest notes to get. Once you have those mastered, try going higher.
