Yes. Of the around 130 brands I have worked on, it would be in the top 8, and most of those top 8 you probably would not have heard of if you are asking that question.
For STUDENT flutes I would put those completely made in Japan as definitely the top. However I have the impression from what I read and hear, that they are `lessened` by the manufacturing input in USA.

Yes, I think that Yamaha flutes are good. I think that Japanese made flutes beat American flutes by absolute miles! The Japanese just are amazing at making flutes!
I luv my Murumatsu! I spent a whole day at Topwind, London , and my top 3 flutes were ALL Japanese!
You should ask Topwind, but in the end its all down to personal choice!

I think that Murumatsu flutes are great. I have 1 now, and (as I said) when I went to topwind, london for the day trying out all of their mid-range flutes, murumatsu stood out a mile for me and my style of playing. I also liked the Miyawaza (don`t know spelling, but it`s a famous japanese 1 I`m sure you will have heard of). However, the Murumatsu was as the top of the price list for mid-ranges so possibly this may come into it? Anyway, I love it!

Muramatsus are generally regarded as aomong the world`s best flutes.
Even their `cheaper` ones, EX & GX always stand out for me when I play test them after servicing them.
As I understnd it, Galway uses one of these as his practice flute, at least in 2003.

Yes, I am a woodwind & sax repair specialist.
To do the job well requires a certain set of attributes which are not particular common. It also involves a considerable investment in specialised equipment and stock.
I really enjoy the job satisfaction. People are not `emotionally` attached to their home appliances, but they often are with their musical instruments, so making these `contraptions` go well creates a very different sort of customer satisfaction.

Yamaha makes excellent instruments. The flutes are especially good. I have owned many Yamahas and others. Guitarist Strat man Dwight

Sankyo are readily available here alongside Muramatsu. In general, if people can afford it, they tend to prefer Muramatsu. But Sankyo are excellent flutes.
