Hi,

the first thing you have to do is search for a good fingering charge. I know you can get one at www.hafabraservices.net (instrumenten, hout) but it`s in Dutch...

first only practise with the head of your flute. put your lower lip on the mouthpiece so that you cover 1/3 (one third) of the opening.
suppose you say the word "puh" and blow/breathe so that the flow of air hit the opposite edge of the opening.

turn the flute until you get a good sound.

when you have practised enough with only the head, you can strat practising with the whole flute.

I hope this will help you to learn playing the flute. good luck!!!

I`m sorry for my poor English, but I`m from the Netherlands.

Greets from the Netherlands, joyce

More so for flute than most other instruments, it is vital that you get at least a few lessons from an experienced and accomplished flute player/teacher, to start off doing things right, otherwise your start can be as full of problems as trying to play the piano with your toes.

I agree that a few lessons would be advisble. I started flute two months ago (play clarinet and sax) and I still have trouble at times getting a good sound, but it`s a matter of pracitice and trial and error. I bought the boo, How To Play the Flute, by Howard Harrison (10.95) and I find it very well written and helpful with a logical progression of pieces to practice on.
Good luck.
