Hi, I`m a beginning flute player, and I just wanted to know your opinions on which flute is better.

Gemeinhardt 2SP or the Yamaha YFL-261?

Thanks!

My begginer flute was an Armstrong, now I have an Intermediate Yamaha Flute. Yamaha are made in Japan and are better quality, I wish I would`ve been playing on a Yamaha when I was a begginer!

Go for the Yamaha if you want loud, clear, full tone. Gemeinhardt if you want quieter, deader, fuzzier tone.

The standard of engineering is satisfactory on both.

Pick Yamaha! Having owned flutes from both companies, my Yamaha seems a lot sturdier than my Gemeinhardt. My Yamaha has only been in the shop twice (the first time to make a few adjustments, which the repair guy did terribly and ended up causing more problems, and the second time with a different repair man to fix the problems of the first). My Gemeinhardt (now about 5.5 years old) plays really fuzzy in the low octave and won`t get out low C, and has a lot more issues in tuning to itself. My Yamaha plays easily and cleanly down to low B, and I love it! As always, my opinions may not be true of every Gemeinhardt and Yamaha flute, but they just reflect my experience with the products. Both companies are reputable and will give you a nice quality flute, but if I had to pick, I would buy the Yamaha.

BTW, my experience is with literally hundreds of student Yamahas and hundreds of student Gemeinhardts.

ummmm... well i think gemeinhardt but its real expensive i play picc and it has served well 4 @least 20 yrs of hard playing from my mom and then 5 more from me and has only had 4 trips to the shop (2 of which were accidental drops 1 fm each of us) but my flute is an armstrong and i found it @ a pawn shop 4 $115 and i think its pretty good too.

I have not had much experience at all with Gemeinhardt, but I know that everyone that I know who has a Yamaha (including myself) is very happy with it. They are a well-respected make of flute.

I would say Gemeinhardt. Mine`s about3 years old and i`ve just taken it to the shop once. My teacher says Gemeinhardt is better, but i know an awesome flute player who has yamaha. I`d say it just depends on how well u take care of it!!

Does your teacher get a commission every time he sends a student to that shop to buy a Gemeinhardt? This is a very common practice! Many teachers` advice is NOT impartial.

Have you had significant experience with Yamaha as WELL as Gemeinhardt? If not, then your opinion has little validity, because it is not a comparison.

I could say an XYZ car was the best car in the world if that was the only one I had ever experienced, but my opinion would be BS.

meme - pls do not bite everyone`s head off every time they say something. This is a forum, and that means that ppl can say how they feel, with their experience of flutes. It doesn`t mean that they have to be a flute repair person with knowledge of 100s of flutes, otherwise you`d be the only person writing in here.

Are Gemeinhardts and Yamahas the only flutes available in your area?

Have you tried to see if a flute festival will be occuring in your area, so you can try other flutes?

Beth, pls do not bite my head off every time I say something."

Do not resort immediately to emotional reactions to a rational. Use some intelligence to carefully consider the content of the statement and evaluate it. THEN present you perspective of why you disagree with the statement. That is discussion.

And pls don`t mother me! "Do this... Don`t do that...." You`re so bossy!

My first sentence should have read "Do not resort immediately to emotional reactions to a rational statement."
