I`m a highschool flautist and I`m very interested in purchasing a new flute, preferrably an intermediate or advanced one. I`m going to go to college for flute performance and I`m hoping that someone can suggest a good flute to buy. Unfortunately, I don`t have very much money (over 1000 may be too much)but I want an open-holed, silver flute with a B foot. If anyone could tell me the best and highest quality brands under $1000, I would appreciate it (like Jupiter? Geimhardt? Yamaha? Armstrong? Pearl? or any others, but which is the best?). Thank you very much in advance

Go for a Yamaha or Gemeinhardt! They`re the best in my very personal opinion.

actually i think that you can get a very decent Miyazawa for that price (could it be silver plated? personally i think plating doesn`t make the sound any different) i`m thinking about selling my old one. so if you want more info, you could e-mial me

I dont reccomend anyhting by gemeinhardt. period.
Yamaha Flutes are good but they`re more pricey. You could get a decent Pearl flute Im sure. Check out Fluteworld.com

If you`re planning on going into flute performance, you`d better be prepared to spend at LEAST $5000 on a flute. In your price range, however, I`d recommend the Sonare line of flutes. I`ve played the different models and I highly recommend all of them.

Yes, sorry, to say this, but a $1000 flute would probably not serve you very well if you plan to major in flute in college...

But of course, it`s the player, not the flute, that makes the difference. But your professor would definitely be insisting that you upgrade, by several thousand dollars.

Do not get a gemindhart. They have tons of problems. An Armstrong is your best bet...

Powell is also a good brand, but they may be pricey.

Gemeinhardts suck! Anyone that I have ever heard play on one usually does too.

Jilly, that`s not nice. Gemeinhardt is fine for a beginner, especially a young one, but I do think that there are better ones. And what`s with the name "Jilly", may I ask?

i never had a problem with my gemeinhardt except when i got older i wanted an offset g and the yamaha had a better sound. I did not "suck" on my gemienhardt and i did not have any alignment problems for 9 years with it! I was first chair flute in my highschool wind ensemble. As for my community band the top two chairs this one girl and me we have yamahas. The other 3 have gemienhardts and at one point i did as well and sounded nice. The one lady had hers for 30 years so I`ve heard from others it was mechanically better then before it was redesigned. So try flutes out and whatever sounds best and feels right for you and COSTS the amount you can afford make your choice.

Personally, I think a Yamaha is your best bet. I play an open-hole Yamaha flute and its great. I am only in middle school, so you can already imagine how you`d sound. If you`re a begginer, then go with a closed-hole flute because open-hole flute can make you light-headed. Anyways, hope you find whateber you looking for and good luck!

Best advice... confer with a teacher or a flute expert recommended by the teacher. If this is your 2nd or 3rd flute, and you are 11th grade or up... you should be at the stage of selecting a flute out of a field. If you plan to play in college, your parents should be brought into the discussions because a flute is as much a part of college finances as the tuition. If you buy the wrong flute, you will just have to go an buy another one when you get to college. My daughter looked at Yamaha, Dean Yang, Jupiter, Trevor James, Sonare, Sanyo, and a few other brands (Gemeinhardt is considered only in piccolo field). Some flutes are difficult to play and some are easy to play, depending on your style and embouchure. So don`t make a choice on price or rumor. You have to get find the best match for you. Expect to spend a few hours trying them all out. Any reputable store will work with you and your expert to do this. Best wishes.
