Sonare (great sound)
Pearl
Jupiter
Yamaha

Profession flutes:
Brannen
Powell
Murumatsu

Well the Sonare is a nice head on a cheaply made body. If you like that idea, go with the new Altus Azumi. It has an Altus Britannia silver head and a much better constructed body and scaling. Same price...(they are new so many people probably haven't seen them yet. )

Gemeinhardts, can be made to play very nice. They are finished horribly. The embouchure holes by and large need to be recut and then they need to be setup. They are like raw meat coming out of the factory. A setup generally runs @ $125. So considering the other choices and prices, you can get a gemeinhardt to play pretty darn good but it will cost you more and the other manufacturers setups are much, much better.

Pro flutes...there are so many out there.. Find one you like and then play it.

Hey great, you like the Azumi, that one is top of the list of flutes I want to try when I finally go and buy. (I think my first post on this forum concerned the Azumi...) I had some concerns about the possible quality of the body work in comparison to a Yamaha for example, never having seen any feedback on it, being new of course. Some people I spoke to where skeptical, but hadn't actually handled one. I'm glad to hear you've got a good impression of them. The price over here is very competitive, much more so than the Sonare.
