Hey everyone...I`ve been watchin people in my band and notice that each "instrument group" has it`s own personality.
Flutes-Nice to most people, but are soooo mean to the rest of the section.
Trumpets-SO egotistical. "How many trumpets does it take to screw in a light bulb? Only one...the world revolves around him!" lol
Percussion-(this mostly applies to drumline) We are too good to hang out with the rest of the band, so why don`t we form our own clique?
Oboes-Unique
Clarinets-the most agreeable section in my band We`re like family!
Tubas-Alwaaaays together
Baritones-Ignorent
Trombones-No attatchment to each other whatsoever.
Well, that`s all I can think of for the moment. Do any of these apply to your band? How do your`s stack up?
DISCLAIMER-I don`t judge people by what they play, nor do I think that everyone in the section behaves in this manner.
Thanks,
Amanda

Amanda,
All these stereotypes you`re talking about only exist in non-professional settings, for instance, junior and senior high schools. Many band students in grade school aren`t really concerned about the music, and improving their own skills. Instead, they think that their instrument is the best, and even though they usually can`t play it very well, they like to rub the fact that they play that particular instrument in other people`s faces. If you went into a college band and acted like that, people would look at you like you had six heads. If you are annoyed by all the immature band students out there, then just hang in there, because the professional world accepts adept, mature musicians with open arms.

I`ve actually found that most professionals and college musicians feel that their instrument is the most important in all of music. They`re just more subtle about it.

Amanda, the description of your band sounds like I`m in yours! Everything you said fits exactly like mine. Oh and by the way Thomas, you said that
"Many band students in grade school aren`t really concerned about the music, and improving their own skills. Instead, they think that their instrument is the best, and even though they usually can`t play it very well, they like to rub the fact that they play that particular instrument in other people`s faces."
How could you even possibly say that people in grade school are not concerned about their music or improving their skills? I take offense to that, for I am in grade school. I`m pretty sure that almost every person in grade school wants to improve their skills. You were once in grade school, and so were professionals, and your telling me they didnt want to become better?? I dont want to sound mean, but what you said is totaly incorrect.

Oboist,
I apologize, I did go out of control there. I know that there are many grade school students who are very focused about improving their skills on their instrument, and who also want to eventually become professional. What I was trying to say was that my high school band experience was horrible, and I used that as a generalization. I know quite a few people my age who play their instruments really well, but none of them live anywhere near me, so I guess that says something. My school attracts more actors and dancers than musicians.
After reading my post again, I do agree with you. We musicians all started out playing in school bands, and we do owe our playing to those school bands, to some extent. I`m sorry if I offended you, I was just going on a rant and decided to press "submit".

Ha, ha, yeah, JaedieMay, bass clarinets are wierd. Being one, I know and see that. However, it does make it a little hard to get along with people who are very down to earth...

Wow, that totally describes the majority of the people who play in our band LOL. Us clarinets are like family, the percussionists think they`re too cool to hang out with everyone else.

That was definitely our trumpets and clarinets (yay clarinetists!). Our flutes were really nice to absolutely everyone, though, and most of our trombone players were really good friends.

but that thing about the trombones....OH MY GOD IS THAT TRUE FOR OUR TROMBONE PLAYERS!none of us really get along, and i dont know if its the fact that im a girl, but i seriosly have a problem with two of the other three!they are lazy SOB`S and everyday they give me crap about the fact that i actually take the 10 seconds it takes to put my trombone away!they just slide their trombones in a cubby hole! no cases or anything!it ticks me off!

flutes tend to be really annoying and perky. and frankly, as a clarinet player, the clarinet section tends to be pretty incompetant. i`ve seen this among four bands in the schools i`ve been in. that is, they tend to take little to no initiative to better their playing.
