I`m playing bari sax in our jazz band, and one chart that we`re playing (North South by Dan Cavanagh) has me doubling on bass clarinet. I`ve played the Bb and the Eb Contralto clarinet before, so I understand all of the fingerings for the clarinet, but I`m having a tough time on the bass for some reason. Due to my financial situations and my laziness, I am using my tenor sax reeds on the bcl mouthpiece, which I have heard works. I have an extremely tough time getting out all of the notes higher than the top line F. I have tried using the resting rod, and I have tried using my neckstrap to support the instrument. I find that the angle of the mouthpiece is better (and easier to play from) if I use my neckstrap.
Do you guys have any tips for me to get the high notes out easier? Thank you in advance. (FWIW, I am a sophomore music ed major at a 4 yr private college, with my concentration in saxophone.)
