Whenever I play on the clarinet, my sound is always accompanied by a breathy, reedy sound that reminds me of blowing a raspberry. I am sure that no air is leaking through my embouchure, my reed is perfectly fine and broken in, and my clarinet is in good condition. No one seems to know why I`m getting this problem, not even my band directors. It does seem that I get this soumd more on certain notes, like C sharp and E flat, than others. I have been playing clarinet for about a year, and I am currently using a number 4 reed. I am not vertain if the reed number or the brand have anything to do with this breathy sound, and I really hate it. Would somebody please help me?

hi

i`ve been playing for about a year too
im on size 2 "Vandoren", reeds i had the same problem a little while ago my teacher suggested that i tighten my embachure up a little or loosen it a fraction, that worked for me. My teacher said if it didn`t then try a different sized reed ( size=number)

I use 3`s usually, and even 2 1/2, if it is a
good brand, like Vandoren Selects, ordered on
the internet.
You can`t get Vandoren Selects at the music store,
only Vandoren.
Also mouthpieces all are different, so wash out
someone elses and try it out.
Good Luck.

ummmmm why are you on a 4?! I have been playing for 8 years and I am on 3.5! Your size of strength has nothing to do with how well you play or how advanced you are FYI.

By any chance is you reed too high on the mouthpiece because that sometimes is the cause.... I did that one lesson lol
