Comeing up this spring we will be having a concert and the senior band members that are in full orchestra have the choice to do a concerto. I really would like to do one but I do not really know what to pick. I am looking for a concerto for Bb clarinet with either a string or piano acompaniment(sp). If you have any suggestions as to a good one to do please let me know. It is really appreciated because it is the first year for this in our school.

Well, that all depends on how long you have to prepare it. I prefer to play the Nielsen Concerto for Clarinet for concerts/auditions, but that piece is quite technical. Maybe, if you are looking at something impressive, but not quite as technical, go with the Poulenc Sonata, Debussy`s Premiere Rhapsodie, Mozart`s Clarinet Concerto (personally I hate this concerto being that it is WAY overplayed), or possibly the Copland Concerto. Copland is my backup at an audition, but be careful suring the cadenza or things can go SO WRONG during a performance. Practice, Practice, Practice! -Dennis
