I came across a clarinet in an antique store here in Ohio. It is a silver metal clarinet. The front of the clarinet has engraving stating: Silver King - Made by the HN White Co. - Cleveland Ohio. It also has the sterling silver mark on the bell. The inside of the bell is gold plated or some type of gold metal. The clarinet is missing it's mouthpiece. I was wondering if missing the mouthpiece would deter any protential buyers. I was thinking of selling it soon.

Thank you

Did you mean that the mouthpiece adapter was missing? A clarinet mouthpiece is not a big deal and deserves no mention, but you should make sure to let people know that it doesn't come with a mouthpiece adapter or they will be in for quite a shock when they try to see if it plays.

Perhaps you can find an adapter on ebay to make it a full set (if that is what is missing, of course).

I believe the adapter is there. Isn't that the piece that has the serial number on it? It seems to be missing the black plastic mouthpiece. Thank you very much for replying to my question.

A basic cheap black mouthpiece you can find for a few bucks at a music store. It really is something that does not need to be included in the sale of an instrument, especially one of this age.

The clarinet should end at the top at with a narrow opening. There should be another piece which is metal that goes into the narrow tube that the mouth piece goes into. It's a bit necessary, you would need to note that it's missing if you sell the instrument.

No I don't play. I am just a mom who was helping out our local school. I was actually looking in the antique store for a clarinet to make a lamp for an elementary school band concert banquet. I came upon this silver king clarinet and purchased it. When I started to clean the bell, I saw the sterling mark and decided to research the brand. It seems to nice now to make it into a lamp so I thought maybe I should sell it and find it a better home. That is why I probably sound like a dummy. I did take it to a music store today and they said that is missing only the mouthpiece so I feel better about that. I found this site and thought you experts could help me with my original question. I hope this clears up my clarinet ignorance.

Thank you for the article and photos. It looks as though I am only missing the black mouthpiece after viewing the photo. There is a Silver King on ebay now but it states no gold plating inside the bell and seller can't find the sterling mark. I guess mine is a little different. So many models..so confusing.
