I'm about to go off to college, and I realized that my mouthpiece seems pretty beat up and should probably be replaced. Does anyone have an idea as to what model or brand I should be looking at?
The only way to be sure of your purchase is to ask your future clarinet professor what he/she wants you to get. I wouldn't spend the money until you get their opinion. Plus, your professor will probably let you play several mpcs before recommending one for your setup. I'm assuming you're going to a music school?
I will be going to a university and plan to audition for their concert bands(auditions are at the beginning of the semester). I am also considering music education as a major. Would this make a difference in what I should be looking at or whom I should talk to about the problem?
Just ask whoever the clarinet professor is what they would want you to do. Normally, their email is on the college's website.
My guess is that they would tell you to wait until you start lessons with them so they can make a qualified decision about your playing, your horn, mouthpiece, etc. The mpc only part of the big picture. My mpc might work great for me but be terrible on someone else's horn, for example. Good luck!
