Hello all. I would like to know how many people tongue and how many people don't. I have been told not to puff but tongue all notes except slurrs. Is this just manditory for playing the clarinet?

Tonguing is completely mandatory. There's no way to make a characteristic clarinet sound otherwise. Good luck!

Tonguing is a necessary part of playing any wind instrument. You need to use your tongue to get a clear, crisp begining to your notes, unless of course they are slurred. Using short puffs of air will not get you a good sound. Use a continuous steady flow of air punctuated with your tonguing.

learn how to tongue, it is absolutely essential, in an ensemble all it takes is one person not tonguing to ruin the entire sound iof the piece!

Ok so tonguing is important and I'm getting the hang of it now. I tongue all notes when appropriate but it makes the clarinet sound a bit tongue tied. How do I get rid of the tongue tied sound?

make sure your fingers aren't ahead of your tongue, or vice versa.

Make sure that your fingerings are right and with the tempo first. Try slurring everything first and then when you get the fingerings right, add the tounges. Play as slowly as needed and don't speed up the temp till you can play it perfectly five times in a row.

I have been told by several different people that to tongue, you need to say "ta" while playing, kind of, if that makes any sense. That way your tongue touches the top of your mouth, but not your teeth. I never succeeded and I just stopped the air without tongueing. Then I was told to dbl. tongue, and it doesn't work out as well. My professor is helping me with it all currently, so hope that helps!
