Hey, I play the B flat clarinet in marching band, but now that marching season is almost over, my band director wants me to switch to bass clarinet, so i did. I thought it would be cool and a new thing to do. but problem is ive never played bass clarinet before, can anyone help me out? Are the fingerings the same? or different? does it take a long time to learn bass clarinet after switching from B flat clarinet?

Thanks

Yay for you switching to bass clarinet! bass clarinets are amazingly awesome!

Yes, the fingerings are the same as soprano ("Bb", a term which annoys me as used to identify the standard soprano, but I digress) clarinet, with the exception of the very lowest note(s), which don't exist on soprano. Eb is that extra right hand pinky key at the bottom. The very top (above C above the staff) is slightly different, but you probably won't be playing up there anytime soon- it rarely is needed in most band music, I mostly only use it in scales or when I'm playing stuff written for soprano.

The primary difference in playing bass clarinet is it takes A LOT of air, and the embouchure is slightly different. I often find myself loosening to hit notes that would need an extremely tight mouth on soprano. Play around a little, you'll figure it out. It's not that difficult a transition, usually. Some people find they can't play bass, and some bass players can't play soprano(my friend who sits second chair is one) but generally it's not too hard to switch.

You may have difficulties playing quite as fast on bass, because the keywork is so much longer it tends to move a little slower, but you will get used to it and it will get easier with practice.

On a side note... oompa's will soon become the bane of your existance, and marches will drive you crazy. But have fun! if you want any music or music suggestions,(or have any pressing bass-related questions) drop me a message via my profile, i'd be glad to help!

Good choice! Bass rocks.

Laeta is right on with her stuff. Let me give you some equipment details that might help...

1. I've taken lessons with 2 symphony players/university professors who both use Vandoren "3" reeds with a Selmer C* mouthpiece. That's what I use, though there are many other good mouthpieces out there. Don't use a reed harder than a 3.

2. Even a great horn can be frustratingly useless if it has a leaking pad or two. Bass clar should be rather easy to play/blow, and if it's not, something is wrong, be it your reed/mpc or horn. I teach bass clarinet lessons and am always adjusting my students horns to play at their best. Never settle for a sound that's airy, dull, or difficult to produce. It should be free-blowing and vibrant.

3. Don't be afraid to play loudly. Bb soprano players sometimes are startled by the amount of vibration a good bass clar set-up produces, so they play too softly. It should resonate all through your body on every note.

4. Start new reeds every month. A good test for a reed is playing slurred from an open-G down to Low-E at "pp". There should be NO airiness in the sound if the reed is correct for you and your mouthpiece. If moving the reed tip to different locations (up/down, left/right) doesn't help then have your private teacher sand or otherwise adjust your reeds.... or just keep buying boxes until you find several great ones.

I hope that helps. Good luck!
