My clarinet`s name is Maya, and my alto sax`s name is Edgar. My first clarinet`s name was Clarissa, and when I was playing bass clarinet this past summer for a musical, I named her Helga.

I named my clarinets as well    22:20 on Saturday, November 8, 2003

I named my clarinet Peresozo (Spanish for lazy) Perry for short...

My alto clarinet is named Mamma clarinet & the E Flat soprano is Baby :D

See, I have almost the whole clarinet family, my friend has the father (ahrm, the bass clarinet) & I have the teenage (B Flat soprano), mother, & baby. :D

I also think I have too much free time, but I did find out that quite a few people in my band named their instruments as well.

I think the hobbit names are best for clarinets! I`m a huge LOTR fan and I have named four of my clarinets even though I also consider it to be dorky! My first clarinet was a Leblanc Noblet 40 and I named that one Mithrandir. My second clarinet was a Buffet R13 and I named that one Tinuviel. My next clarinet, a matching R13 A clarinet, I named Beren. And the R13 Eb is named Elanor. But I also pull the same deal as Rachel with my clarinets getting ugly names when they are not cooperating...

Also, to whoever it was who said that the clarinet bears no resemblence to hobbits - I disagree! If you listen to the soundtrack for any of the three LOTR movies you can hear that the composer (Howard Shore) also agreed with me and used the clarinet (violin and flute) to portray the hobbit theme throughout the entire score. I think that the richness and earthiness of clarinet tone very much resembles the spirit of hobbits in general and especially the 5 "famous" ones. Also, you have a versatility that carries over as well.

I named my clarinet Jack after Jack Brymer - RIP. But I actually would recommend not naming your clarinet since it then gets a personality and turns against you..... ie. falls apart during important solos and stuff.
