In my book & that of most of the teachers I know the B12 is the best beginner instrument there is.

While buying seems expensive at the time you can spend a lot of $$ on renting for no return at all. Also from what I hear you are quite likely to be foisted off with an old instrument of dubious quality possibly badly maintained.

well check with your local music store and see if they have a RENT TO OWN policy, thats how some students buy their horns, they rent and rent and rent, and eventually, the instrument is "payed off". At the music store nearest me, you rent a used instrument, (usually in great condition, if not the rent price is usually lower). and you just rent it, and eventually you own it.

ask around

Renting could or could not be a good idea. You should maybe rent a month or so to see if you really like clarinet because you may decide its not for you. If you like it and you are a beginner, get a plastic clarinet most likely the yamaha brand. If you stick with clarinet, buying would be better. Also, if you do play clarinet in high school, your director will most likely tell you to get a plastic clarinet for marching band and a wooden one for concerts. In that case, if you are in middle school, buying a plastic clarinet would have you covered for beginner years and marching band in the later ones. For marching and what I used for my beginning is a yamaha. If you are to rent though, most music stores do let you rent.

Also, a lot of stores have rent-to-own programs. You start out renting to let you learn and figure out if you want to keep going. If you decide to stick with it, all or a part of your rental fees are applied to the cost of purchase. If you're not sure what to do, I would recommend investigating this possibility.

Well randomgirl123 if you want a random instrument played previously by 123 random girls and are happy not wondering where it has been before then rent otherwise buy.

Yeahh, rent to own is the way to go! That's what I did with my first clarinet and it only took me about 2 or 3 years to pay it off. It's a great way to go if you want a clarinet, but don't have the money to go out and just buy one. I would suggest to renting to own that buffet R-12 cause Buffet clarinets play a whole lot better then my first clarinet, which was a Vito. It was defiantly a piece of crap, but it helped me learn, so I'm greatful. hahaha

I agree, rent to own! That way you also give yourself time to decide if clarinet is really the instrument for you without having to throw all that money out there first.
