Hello,

After watching a video demonstrating a clarinet's more other-worldly abilities such as multiphonic playing I wanted to ask any clarinetists out there who could answer..

To what degree can a skilled player manipulate the tone of a clarinet? Can you replicate the sharp, airy, wind-cutting sound of a flute?

I guess I'm dreaming of a clarinet that sounds kinda like that..still very much like a clarinet but..I also love that wind-cutting, haunting, airy, shimmering flute sound..kind of like what you would hear from an endblown wooden flute like a shakuhachi or a bansuri.

Maybe also the warm, buzzing sound of an Indian drone..

I know people are probably thinking "if you want a flute sound just buy a flute" or "if you want an indian sound by a bansuri" but I dunno it seems like a lot of cool musicians are using instruments in unconventional ways and the clarinet has such a huge range and is so amazing, I thought it'd be cool if you could also capture the magic of other wind instruments..just not sure if this is possible. Like, I know it wouldn't sound exactly like the real thing but I thought maybe through manipulation of the reed, you could maybe get buzzing sounds or really airy sounds rich in harmonics. Dunno.

Any replies to my weird questions would be much appreciated.

It sounds as if you need a wind synthesiser.
