LIsten I play the BC and everything but i think you people are a little obssessed. i love playing the BC though. I`ve been in honor bands and everything and i will say that it is harder to play than the clarinet. i`ve played for about 5 years now so i know what i`m talking about. I do not see why it matters what instrument you play anyway. Anybody out their agree with me?

I agree with bassplayer... other instruments do rock too. I`d really love to play the alto sax, the piano, whatever, but BCs are teh awesome.
I`m not obsessed, but I really like the instrument ^^;

Thanks for agreeing with me! Im not saying that i don`t like the BC or anything but it was getting way too serious. Trust me I would be the first to stick up for the BC and the players. I love the instrument if u ask me.

Bass clarinet is harder instrument to play than regular (sporano Bb) clarinet. You need a lot more lung power, and you better pitch control - the bend in the neck means that it easier to accidentally `bend` notes. (This is why saxes can bend notes all over the lace, but claruneteists can`t normally). I used to double bass clarient in orchestra. My most memorable moment was in a rehearsal, when we were playing theme from "Mission: Impossible". It is the only time I have ended up physically exhausted as a result of playing anything. (Myself and the tuba were playing the same line, and the conductor had complained it wasn`t coming through strongly enough... so were competing somewhat).
On their usefulness: in a standard orchestra, it is limted. There are times when you lots of bass specifcally from the wind, rather than just bass in general. (Which normally comes from tuba/double bass/cello). I would play bass clarient on one, maybe two pieces in a typical concert.
However, in a wind band, a bass clairnet is vital. The bass line is provided only by it, the tuba and the bari sax, and if you lose any one of those, the band can get horribily unbalanced. (I didn`t play bass clarient in my windband - I find normal clarient much more fun )

I dont think this conversation is a bad thing. It is allowing bass players explain their instruments to the people who think we are nothing but bad clarinetplyers. If anything we are the better clarinet players because we Know how to play better in tune and better overall if you know what I mean
