Which clarinet to buy?    03:34 on Monday, February 23, 2004

I am playing clarinet for 1 1/2 years and is playing the Yamaha C10 (lowest and plastic model), YCL 250 is the latest label.

It`s quite heavy(much heavier than Buffet B12 and also E11 i think.) and i feel it sounds uneven on different pitch. Sounds weired on D(Low) and middle D(press register key).

So, I am thinking to buy a new clarinet. Any suggestion?

Choice:
1. buy a B12 and wait until my skills are up to standard and then buy a Professional model? Leblanc, buffet, selmer whatever...

2. Buy a E-series right away.(E11 or E13)

Please kindly suggest! Many Thanks!!!

I am a worker at Music and Arts Center. Try this website www.MusicArts.com there are many instruments to choose from. Anyway...

If you are a student I recommend a STUDENT LINE HORN. Leblanc Vito is great...or Buffet E11. Selmer and Yamaha are great too.

Always pick a clarinet with a good reliable name. Only when you advance do you need to think about a wooden clarinet. I own an Buffet 1973 R13 model which is the standard for professional clarinetists... Selmer Paris model is good too. Music and Arts will have just what you are looking for if it is your area. check out the website...and good luck!

Thanks, Tia.

But I want to know if the E11 is a Wooden clarinet, right?

So, I could choose a wooden one. I just think the tone should be different but can`t figure out the difference when I tried it in the store.

I mean there`s difference but not greatly upgraded as I thought on the sound quality.

anyway, thanks for your advice.

e11s are student line horns. Wooden clarinets have a better tone clarinet. Have you tried the Selma Omega?

Our band leader is asking us to buy an e11 clarinet. However, I have the opportunity to buy an e13. Is the e13 a step up ( not in key but in quality ) or down?

He doesn`t know. (Should that concern me?)

The e-13 is 2 steps higher than the e-11. But I think personally buying an e-13 is a waste since you can buy a professional for a bit more.
