I know what you mean. I play bass too. OK what you should do is (w/out getting flat) open the space b-tween the m-piece and reed as well as put more air in the clarinet

i am in the exact same boat i play bass clarinet and am the only one what i have disscovered is that i found a place to sit in the room to make my sound carry better and just like the others said way more air the more you practice taking deep breaths the larger lung capacity you will get therefor louder sound.

The easiest way of sounding louder is to lower the ombichure (most definitely misspelled) and to give more air. I`m not "in the same boat" yet, but I know where you stand in this situation. I play regular old B-flat Clarinet in the orchestra at my church, and there is this woman there that can really wail on a Tenor Sax, so I have to play really loud just to be heard!

Next semester at my school, I`m going to be playing the Contrabass or "goose" as they call it. That`s the reason for the "yet" in that comment.

first off, lots of air, drop your jaw to the point of occasional sqeekage and practice untill the squeeks are gone.

secondly get some tenor sax reeds, I will recomend java or ZZ. the V16 are good too but they take some getting used to. These reeds will lessen the sqeeking and allow a bigger sound. you will want to a half step lower than what you use in bass clarinet reeds (unless you use vandoren already) vandoren tend to be thicker than other brands.

thirdly, get yourself and open moutpiece ( a big gap between the reed and tip of the mouth piece)go with something that is shorter as well, it makes the chamber wider and allows more air to go into the instrument.

If you do all of this I guarentee you will be much louder

I`m also my school`s only bass because of course the 8th graders suck badly I mean they suck so bad at clarinet that the band teacher doesnt have an 8th grader playing bass to accompany me. I mean when I played Bb in the beggining of the year I played way better than them. Well just practice a lot and blow more air it always works for me and take suggestions from the others.
