wondering if anyone has tips for working on tone. I`ve been playing clarinet for 10 months and am self-taught. There aren`t any teachers in the area so i was wondering if youy had any suggestions that would help imporve the overall sound of my notes (not wether they`re in tune or not)

I have been playing for eight years going on my ninth year the begining of the marching season. The only way that I know of improving the sound is practice and posture. You really have to have the breath support. Some people say that it could be the size of a reed that would cause problems but that depends on the reed size that you use and if you have played a reed instrument before. If you can please e mail me with the size reed you are useing and if you have played a reed instrument before.

Getting a good teacher early is vital to your getting a good start, and your tone is one of the first concepts that you should work on. Are there no colleges or universities close to you or a high school with a director who is a woodwind player?
Try posting in the Selmer clarinet forum which has a high readership where someone might reply to you with a teacher name in your area. Otherwise, listening to recordings of soloists and clarinet pieces gives you some ideas of what you could strive for. Tone depends on everything you do; breath support, mouth formation, mouthpiece/reed set up, and blending your tone with the other instruments that you are playing with. I can get more specific if you need. Tim

Sorry, almost forgot long tones, for instance, first 10 or 15 minutes of a practice session at home, play your scales in long tones, two measures of whole notes for each note of each scale -72 beats per minute starts building your tone. Tim

Pick up a cheap tuner somewhere if you dont already have one and go through your chromatic scale in whole notes with it every time you practice. whole notes from the bottom to the top and back down, then play it again fast. It will improve a lot.
