I am playing Greensleeves, Arr. by Alfred Reed. In the begginning, the part played by the first stand has become my solo...i was wondering if i shoud absolutly not do vibrato or does it matter if i do a little bit. my band director said it was fine if it wasnt too noticeable.

My personal preference is that vibrato on clarinet doesn`t sound very good. It`s up to you, I suppose. How do you think it sounds with or without?

whats the point if it isn`t noticeable? vibrato sounds good in certain pieces. perhaps not in an ensemble though.

I`m gonna vote no on this one. Listening to an orchestra, you`ll notice pretty much everyone using vibrato. The only one that doesn`t is the clarinet (and sometimes the brass). Having no vibrato makes the clarinet stand out more. My school concert band played that piece this christmas, and I played the lead solo without vibrato. I like the way it sounds. It`s a pretty fun piece in general too, no?

Well my concert was last night....i did pretty well on the solo, and my friend who is lead trumpet said she cried it was so good. i did not do vibrato, but i didnt think it sounded that bad without it. it still sounded good.

I would say no. At my highschool they don`t even teach vibrato to clarinets. The only reason I know is from private lessons. In this peace the simplicity in your tone will make it beautiful not the vibrato...i am going to have to say no.

in my opinion vibrato for clarinet should only be used in jazz and clarinet solo music , not music for band.
