NO!! it stinks. Cause our jazz band stinks as a whole and i can play a lot of jazz stuff and love it too, but my STUPID director says they aren`t is really jazz bands, which is a bunch of crap. O well, I`m thinking of starting my own jazz band with a few friends of mine. Later

It depends on which sort of jazzband you want to join. I play in a little one with me, a tenor, a trumpetist a piano player and a bas. Though it would be pretty cool to play in the reall jazz band with trombones and so on.

Ours kind of does....they want me to learn Bari Sax for it. I`m hopin this will happen. But if not they want me on bass clarinet (i already play this). I`m unique in our school. They have one Jazz Clarinetist (me), one Bass Clarinetist and soon, one bari saxophonist (me again). I enjoy being a one of a kind!

well...at our school we have two jazz bands. the six o`clock and the seven o`clock (can you guess how they got their names???). the seven o`clock does not have any clarinets in it but the six o`clock has two and i am one of them. our band director did not get any pieces that had clarinet parts for them, so we either played tenor parts or trumpet parts. we have asked him to get pieces with clarinet parts but he won`t do it. so all of us claires are going on strike against jazz band.

yeah, i think that sucks cos clarinets have a far better sound than a sax. they can play jazz as well as the sax and should be in every jazz band.

No my school does not let clarinets join jazz band and for a band geek like me, it really ticks me off. And then when i asked my band director about it he said clarinets just werent jazzy instruments. What about Benny Goodman??? wasnt he jazzy?? Then my band director hangs up a poster in his room for jazz appreciation month this month and on it is a picture of a person playing clarinet!!!! O i was so mad.
but whatever hopefully he will change his mind.
sincerely,
A very angry clarinetist

Anyone playing anything is allowed to join jazz band at my school. This includes voice, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. I think one of the music teachers is a composer too so he changes the parts around to fit!

They don`t allow jazz clarinets in my school either. Maybe you could get a jazz piece for clarinet off the internet. Then, play it for your director. If they like it enough, maybe they will let you join.

clarinets are not allowed in jazz bands because not all jazz pieces(wich are usually written for big band) have clarinet parts. some do however, and you usually have a sax player double clarinet for those pieces, instead of having a dedicated clarinet player play that and rest for the other songs. thats what my school`s jazz band did 2 years ago, there was a clarinet feature and the 2nd tenor player (i think) played it. he originally played clar but then learned sax to be in the jazz band. so if you learn sax to join jazz band, you will probably play clarinet for those pieces that have clarinet parts, if thats what you want to do. and dont give saxes such a hard time, try them and maybe you will like it. I started tenor sax a year ago and am loving it, hope to be in jazz band next year.

yeah, our school doesn`t allow clarinets to join jazz band. i would know, im first chair clarinetist and i really wanted to be in jazz band, so i picked up the tenor. i am doing pretty well, being its almost the same as the clarinet
in our jazz band there is, but im not POSITIVE...
5 trumpets
4 altos
4 tenors (yeah this is kinda high, but im hoping for a clarinet solo or two to drop that down to 3)
1 bari
3 trombones
a bunch of percussionists
2 keyboard (they switch)
1 bass
lol
oh man my firsrt jazz band practice ever is tomorrow, wish me luck!

they dont let clarinets play in jazz bands in high schools because when they order the music for clarinets (for some unknown reason) isnt in the score. i dont know why it makes me really mad though. one time the let a clarinet player play a solo but i think that she translated the sax solo to a clarinet part.

Clarinets sound horrible in jazz band. If you want to play jazz pick up the sax or play clarinet in a jazz combo. Save the big band parts for the saxs. 99% or clarinetists can`t swing anyways.
