put the clarinet back into your and start on your tuning note and work your way up and see if it helps a lot with your high notes.

If you arent already doing this you should sit up straight and pull out from the mouth piece so your notes won`t sound sharp or flat. Use your tuning note that help`s a lot to.

The main reason for squeaks is that you are pinching the reed.
For a good embouchure, point your chin towards the floor- if you look in a mirror, it should be flat- and pull the corners of your mouth in. Also make sure you have a really focussed airstream.

Hi everybody

You know, a great site with lots of really knowledgeable tips is www.sneezy.org and then go to "Sherman Friedland`s Corner". The man has tons of experience in clarinet playing and teaching, and you can email him and get a thoughtful reply. In general, I`d say improving your tone takes time and a lot of awareness. Breath support, a good reed (not too strong, not too soft) and your clarinet in good working order are essential. It may take some time before you can produce good high notes. In fact, any really good notes. Remember you have to develop your embouchure and the muscles around it too. About difficult notes, it`s more about better diaphragm support and not so much a matter of "blowing harder" or "biting" the reed more. Hope I have helped.

It`s embouchure, and make sure not to make it tight instead of firm- that will cause problems later. Also- blowing hard isn`t really the solution I think, have good air support by blowing fast air, but by blowing hard that will only make you louder and not improve your tone. Practice long tones to imrpove your endurance and lung capacity.

what i think is basically happening there is your embouchure. The best thing to do is adjust it to where you can get all of your notes out clean and in tune. Also the way you sit will help. It is best to sit up straight and on the edge of your seat. Sitting up straight will help your breathing. Also, you will need to breathe from your diagram instread of breathing from your chest.

Have you ever thought about taking sining lessons? I think it would really help. Because, even if it sounds silly, singing and playing the clarinet have a lot in common. At least technic of the body.

I`ve been playing the clarinet for about 2 years now and moved up to the bass clarinet 1/3 of the way through my second year. i have difficulties playing the upper register. If I play a normail C with fingers 1,2,3 and add the register key it doesn`t squeak, but once I try to play the high A it squeaks. I don`t know if it is me or my instrument. You see this is my schools instrument and there is a crack on the lower part of my instrument where the lover keys are. Could that be why it is sqeuaking or is it just me? I would appreciate any feedback.

hey tiff, my name`s tiff too, haha, anyway, it prolly is the crack that`s messing you up. one time someonet on my clarinet, i jus ignored it, and then it started cracking like #$@$@%!, yah, so it messed up my playing, i couldn`t play anything higher than a Bb. anyway, you should go to your band director before the crack gets any worse and ask for an exchange.

yEah.. don`t tighten your lips for high notes... instead u should loosen it (according to my teacher) be more relaxed, but ur air speed should be faster... and imagine u are blowing upwards

when you are trying to play high notes, make a "kheee" sound. Make sure that you have good posture and make sure that your clarinet is in a good angle. don`t bite the reed because then it makes it hard to play high notes
