Uh... I don`t think there would be great differences, they just have to play songs without those wonderful oboe solos

I don`t know about bands, but definately orchestras, symphonies and some ensembles will need the exquisit features of the oboe sound. Just like flutes and bassoons. Flutes, we get wonderful solos and stuff but sometimes/most times we are not heard in a band. We are sometimes/most times heard in orchestras, symphonies, ensembles (flute choir/ensembles especially!). Bassoons have the exquisit sound also, and they get fantastic solos and things but most of the time hold up the woodwind section in orchestras and symphonies, and usually bands won`t be effected without or with a bassoon, but it all differs in the type of music you play.

My teacher says I`m pretty important. I have a lot of solos.

Well, for one, my band doesn`t have an oboe, a bassoon, an english horn, a french horn, or a piccolo player. What is it like without them? Terrible. Even more so when you consider that 4 out of 50 people in my band are actually committed musicians, and can actually play worth a sh!t. Man, college is just too far away...

Oh, and oboes are very important. Especially when you come across someone who can play it well.

Well, there aren`t oboes, bassoons or english horns in my band, 2 piccolos which are rarely used, and well, I can`t really complain, but oboes and bassoons are really important in orchestras.

Isn`t it wierd that I`m in an elementary band and we have a piccolo (me) a french horn, and an oboe? Even though the oboe player never brings her instrument on purpose...

I think Oboes are important. I have this upcoming Solo in my Spring Concert. but usally if they don`t have one, they just replace them with the flute, since their notes are similar. That`s what my band does before I played Oboe.
