Am I the only one to get made fun of out there for doing such a thing while I`m playing, people tease so much about it its kinda sad. Does anyone else get this or am i just the only one, I dont even notice that I do it, and i know its not blatently obvious that i do it, but people just laugh. Is that some sort of bad habit, or is it natural to sway or bob while playing? Does anyone else out there get made fun of like me......i feel like everyone is watching while im playing and i dont feel like i can tell them "you can do that, or your suppose to do that while playing", unless i know if thats true or not.

I have the same problem! I always start to sway when I`m playing. I don`t think there is anything wrong with this, but I am a begginer at oboe and have not even had one lesson yet so don`t take my word for it. I do know that its not a big deal for flute because my teacher does it as well as I.

Ya I like to sway a lot when playing the flute and piano, but not as much on the clarinet. The piano I guess you have to move most times, and I sway sometimes on the flute to keep the tempo rather than tapping my foot... and when I move back and forth playing the flute, I squeeze my diaphragm (sp) to get more, less, stronger, weaker air. Also when the song is happy I kinda jump around, and a sad song I move side ways... Sad, really sad but it`s true but people in my band look up to me... well some of them cause I kinda lead the whole band even if I play the flute, the piccolo sure does the job. Everyones looking at their music so they don`t really see me anyways.

I do move around and it`s perfectly natural. Don`t worry about what others think. When I was learning I did and was always made fun of but now not so much anymore! Just make sure it doesn`t ruin your musical line- it should never destory that or interupt it. Hope this info helps!

keep any movement to a minimum - I often hold the bell of the oboe for my students to keep them from moving around too much. It is distracting, and does nothing to help the music.

I agree with oboeteacher. Keep the motion to a minimum. It is distracting to the audience.
It`s particularly annoying to see a musician keeping time (beating) with his instrument in the presence of a conductor -- although in small ensembles without a conductor it may be necessary to move with the beat so that everyone can play together. Also, try to avoid foot tapping as that is distracting to the audience as well.
