I feel like an outsider in this forum. I play flute, but have been considering learning the oboe also, so I`ve got a few questions. Firstly, what is a good beginner oboe that is affordable. Are there any brands I should stay away from? And lastly, is it really painful to play it with braces on????? Thanks in advance.

the third thing i can "teach" you:don`t get frustrated. learning the oboe takes a lot of time, but when you have reached a certain level it is one of the beutifules things on this world!!!

hey! I`m a clarinetist. I`m going to start taking oboe lessons this summer to learn it! I taught my self the sax. I hear the oboe is hard to blow. Are there any clarinet people that also play oboe out there? How different is tongueing and stuff?

the main difference is the embochure i think!
you have two reeds instead of one, and you can modify the tone in a wide range(so can be a really bad oboist:-)

Hey, I have played the oboe for almost 4 years and when I first started out on it I had braces and it didn`t hurt at all. For me, the oboe is sometimes tough. The reeds can be a pain because they are so expensive and some days they are harder to blow into. If you do start playing make sure that you keep a little container with water in it so that you can soak your reed in so you won`t have to lick it forever. Oh and don`t get frustrated with the range that you can play. I usually can`t play the notes around middle c perfect.
Goodluck and enjoy

Hey! I used to play the clarinet and now I play oboe. The fingerings are way different but the tounging is the same. THe embochure is kinda hard to learn but you will probably pick up on it very quickly. GOod Luck!

Thats really good to hear, I went from the flute to the oboe and have not looked back. You will find many of the finger positions are similar(the same in some cases). But I found once playing the oboe I can`t play the flute the way I used to. I put too much air through it now. But congrats and good luck. The oboe is an amazing instrument, and not that many people are brave enough to step outside the square and try something different. Good luck
