I bought this at a garage sale for 20 bucks. It seems to be an oboe so I`m asking you guys. The mouthpieces don`t look oboe-ish though, from what I`ve seen its usually a long thin reed, right? Maybe its some kind of saxophone. For the pics, copy and paste the URL into your browser window. Plus, the logo on it is very cool: Clown! From chicago! I know that not many things are manufactured in the USA all that much now, and Clown is definately not a current manufacturer like Bach or Yamaha. What is this instrument?

Thanks for anyone who helps me out!

Upon further inspection, it is a Lyon and Healy brand from Chicago with a big picture of a clown engraved on it.

It`s probably an soprano saxophone as said from the above. You can tell it`s a saxophone because they are keys that reach the holes at the bottom of the instument. Also, the mouthpiece indicates that it is an single reed instrument.

A clarinet player in a community and I play has one that looks a lot like it. It is a metal clarinet. The one in our band was made during the 1940`s. Not an idea that made it.

That, my friend, be a soprano saxophone. I play one in jazz. =D Dun worry, I`m an oboist too! hehe, Anyway - it`s a soprano sax.

Similarities/differences to oboe? Most of the fingerings are the same. That`s about it.

Fingerings are all the same as the other saxophones. Soprano Sax is usually in Bb, so it can play the same stuff as a Bb clarinet in band.

This is actually a Martin Handcraft soprano designed by the Lyon and Healy company. Look at this link, which shows the value of a very good condition example for sale now: http://junkdude.com/saxes/ms201437.htm
