I just rented an oboe and a beginners book (im planing to play oboe next year in the school band) so far i have been able to play and learn just using the book ,i still sound like a duck but i think thats normal, and i was wondering if i really need a tutor and i was also wondering what type of reed should i get?and how do you improve your tone ?

Might I suggest you listen to oboe recordings first of all before you begin. Tone will improve over time! Reeds well usually store bought reeds you would usually start off with a Medium or Medium-soft and then you will learn to make your own reeds. Hope this helps!
