Tips For A Returning Oboist....    20:12 on Sunday, November 13, 2005

Hi, my [nick]name is Yoko and I have a problem. [Don`t we oboists all?]

You see... on the contrary that I can`t march oboe, [I know it`s not impossible, just really frustrating as I would imagine.], I picked up the flute. Now that the season is over, it`s time for me to return to oboe.
Playing the flute for approximately 6 months [w/o playing the oboe] has really messed up my embrochure, as you would`ve guessed. Hence my troubles. Now you should know that I have been playing the oboe since my 6th grade year. [I`m now a freshman in high school... that makes this year my 4th.] So it`s not the fact that I`m not skilled at it.

I have no problem with the fingerings, it`s just the embrochure. Would any of you happen to have some effective techniques for a returning oboist? [I`m practicing basically everyday now, but I fear it`s not enough.]

[Thanks in advance]

P.S. - I`m also planning on marching alto sax [Yes, I actually play the sax as well.] next season, because I`m under the influence that it should help out my oboe embrochure. Any comments?

What is wrong with you. You know that the Oboe is probably, if not the neatest thing on earth. Stick with the oboe. There is no doubt playing all these instruments, your stomach is rock solid in giving you the nessary power that an Oboist needs. Get back to the basics. Knowing the fingering does`nt amount to a hill of beans if your tone and pitch isnt there. Practice ,Practice Practice. You can pick up a guitar and start strumming chords after ten years of not playing. But not an oboe baby.

If you become a good oboist, it will help you get a scholarship and pay your way to a university. Flutes and sax are a dime a dozen. Be smart, be loyal, stay oboe Yoko
