Just a question

This is probably a stupid question, but nonetheless... Is it weird to get a sound out of the oboe on your first time? I`ve played trumpet for 3 years, so it might not be that odd. I was just curious because the guy at the music store looked like he expected me to accomplish nothing at all. I think i discovered a 5-note scale... Anyway, just curious.

Yes, yes, yes.
Many would refer that sound as a dying duck...
It`s perfectly normal.

It`s hard to get a sound out of an oboe and even harder to make it sound good. That`s why the guy at the music store looked at you funny.

Well, if you have played an instrument for 3 years, you`re gonna have -some- idea on how to make a sound.
Honestly, it`s not hard to make a sound on an oboe reed and/or oboe. The guy was probably startled because he couldn`t remember how an oboe sounded. =P

Thanks, all. I`m not so confused about that anymore. Oboes are pretty cool, and they do sound kind of weird. When our band class goes silent, you can hear our oboist in the practice room. I`m debating how to tell him I might play the oboe as well...

lol. I`m friends with him, and I like him a lot. He knows that, so I`m afraid that if I sit by him for an hour (and half an hour on jazz band days) every day then I`ll scare him. I also eat lunch with him. I can totally imagine him as territorial though... *cringes in fear* Thanks for the tip!

I told him today, and he said that he`d give me one chance. If I failed, I was out. And he did act territorial... I think my friends were trying to figure out why I was laughing.

The oboe attracts those who like to be... alone . A little healthy competition though will get your both playing at the top of your abilities.

That`ll be fun. Competition with someone I actually know well... not trying to outplay some annoying 1st trumpet who thinks he`s a soloist in concert band... very appealing. I need to beg my mom to take me to the music store this weekend so I can pick up the oboe again. That is the coolest instrument ever!

Wo0t!
Healthy competition is AWESOME. My best friend is an oboist, and so am I. So, for three years, we sat in Honors band together, every day, playing. We both did AWESOME in our All-State tracks, and we could totally tell how and when the other was going to change pitch, and stuff like that.
Of course, We`ll be going to separate colleges, but that`s okay - cuz we`re still gonna be awesome. We`ll just keep the competition between our bands!

That`s pretty cool! Is it like a mind reading thing? I don`t think I`m anywhere near that with my trumpet friends...
I can`t wait to get an oboe now! Umm... not to change any subject (if we`re even on one) But is a small chip at the tip of a reed deadly? I`m trying to remember if I`m squeaking the reed or not now, but I`m seriously paranoid. It`s the only reed I`ve ever had!

a lil incy chip like 1 milimetre should be JUST OK! .. and it shouldnt effect it to bad, but the bigger the chunk that comes off.. the more you haf to worry, it`ll ruin the tone, pitch, EVERYTHING!! so yeah just try to look after them.

Thanks... I probably won`t really know until my band teacher give me the oboe! It`s been about three weeks, and the thing is in the mail? I`m getting all hyper over it again! No matter how much my friends think I`m overreacting, it`ll all be worth it in the end. I hope.

good choice of instrument. I started off playing clarinet, then switched to oboe, and never looked back. Dont get discouraged, when you first start playing, its not gonna sound amazing, just practice practice practice and it will sound amazing in no time.
As was mentioned, a small chip shouldnt hurt anything =) just be careful, oboe reeds arent cheap (at least not here).
