Im learning Oboe and i had that problem a little while ago, you might just have the reed too far into your mouth. Thats what it was for me anyway, hope that helps!

Brand reeds are not that wonderful. I used Jones for awhile and well, the other oboist in my section gave me a few of the homemade reeds her teacher makes for her and well, my intonation just got SO much better. So, yes, try and find/acquire homemade reeds. Anybody on here hopefully will agree with me that they are just a million times better.

And don`t worry, stick to it, my high notes are pretty bad too. And I began a month back so, keep at it!

In my opinion, Emerald reeds aren`t very good... after a while of playing, it does get much better, but for the beginner I`d suggest Rico medium, I havent tried Jones though. Do you soak your reed? If no, that might be the problem for your G

Too high as in sharp or too high as in it tries to jump the octave? It could be the reed and or/your embouchure, but it could also be oboe adjustment issues, or even just the way your oboe is made. My oboe (a yamaha) tends toward sharpness in the upper range. I know it does this so I compensate for it and therefore play in tune.

My point here is that you may want to consider having your oboe looked at by a repair tech to make sure it is in top playing form. Otherwise you`ll drive yourself nuts trying to fix your embouchure or find the perfect reed when both of those are fine.

BTW, when I was a beginner, I played on those god-awful fibercane reeds But at least I could get a sound, no matter what, even after whacking the reed on the music stand numerous times!

*Chuckles at previous posting.* Fibercane reeds are t3h SuXXor. =D

Yeah, could be your embouchure, could be the reed, could be the instrument. Have all of them looked at by a professional oboist/repair tech. =D

never blow less air! always blow more air! very bad!

i regards to the post about homemade reeds, i use them whenever i can, but if i dont get to my teacher as often as i like, i use jones reeds. in my opinion, theyre the best you can do besides homemade ones. some notes on the oboe are natrually out of tune, such as e natural and notes in the upper register. it`s a good idea to have someone look at your oboe and check the key heights, but beyond that, youll have to adjust and make sure the reed isnt too far in your mouth. be sure to always open your throat when you play and use as much air as you can.

ive been playing the oboe for years and im going to school to become a music teacher, you can trust i know what im talking about.
