Some on this forum may have already seen me here asking about bassoons and oboes and how I play the Bass Clarinet.

Now I have a permit...
My music teacher said that I could switch instruments in January. This is where the forum enters.
I am posting here to ask advice on whether I should learn the Oboe or the Bassoon (while keeping in mind the fact that I currently play Bass Clarinet).

If you think this topic is stupid, than don`t post. But if you have any suggestions, I would welcome them.

Well... it all comes down to what you want to learn.. the oboe or bassoon.. its a simple question.. both are great instruments dat are equally challenging.. and both have good parts in music.. i think the bassoon is a hell of a lot more rare.. then oboes.. but oboes is such a important instrument in orchestras and ensembles and stuff.. hmm.. but so is the bassoon hahaa.. sorry didnt really help.

I`d just suggest listening to both and figuring out which sound you prefer. Both are great instruments, and both are fairly uncommon, so it really just comes down to which you prefer. Also, if you have the chance to try each instrument before you make a final choice, you could probably get a sense of which feels more natural to you.

Definitely try them both, if you can that is. I mean, you cannot just necessarily think that because you play bass clarinet, you will want to play bassoon. I mean, I played bass clarinet and went to flute, weird. lol. So give them both a chance, I have yet to try bassoon, but oboe is a nice new change, like someone said above, it is just needed in the band and well, it provides a beautiful sound and has awesome parts. So yes, go for it!

Wo0t!

As an oboist, I`d naturally be inclined to pull you into "The Clan", but...any double-reed will work. =D

Essentially, switching from B.C. to Bassoon would be a bit easier...what am I saying?

Both Oboe and Bassoon are gonna be equally as challenging as the other, so... pick one and have fun!

Ive played both the oboe and the bassoon, and since u play bass clarinet, try the bassoon because it is similar in length and sound (bass.) Bassoon players are scarce now a days so why don`t you try the bassoon?

well, as a bassoonist, i`ll give u some positive and negative aspects about my instrument, in my opinion. (but i`ll rather u choose the oboe)

negative:
1. it`s rather heavy, and bulky- unlike the oboe u can`t take it out and play it with such ease.
2. bassoons require a lot of dedicated maintainance if u luv it shiny!
3. in band, especially beginner bands, the bassoon part is boring.
4. the fingering is rather awkward, and running notes need a hell lot of practice.

poitive:
1. in advanced bands or orchestras, u`ll love your parts.
2. it has a nice, medieval sound which can be emotional or comical.
3. it has a very versatile range, playing both bass and tenor parts.
4. it`s hard to come by a good bassoonist with a fab tone, so if u`re good u`ll get lots and lots of praises haha.

you should do oboe, bassoon is a more advanced stage, if you get good at oboe, then you could play bassoon.
