Hey all! I'm new here.. I def just signed up today. Anywaysss.. I am looking to buy an oboe because I'll need my own when i go off to college (right now I play my school's plastic selmer oboe..boo). Well, I found one on ebay.. and its pretty much out of my price range, but I was wondering if this brand and such was good? I don't know much about the different brands of oboes, but this one seems to be pretty nice. Anyways, thanks for reading all this.. here's the link:

IF YOU CAN AFFORD THAT OBOE IT'S A PRETTY GOOD OBOE. I LOVE PLAYING MY lOREE. LOREE OBOE'S ARE THE TOP OBOE BRAND. IT IS AN EXCELLENT OBOE THAT CAN GET YOU THROUGH COLLAGE. ECSPECIALLY COMPARED TO A PLASTIC SELMER OBOE. BUT AFTER COLLAGE YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET A LOREE WITH A THIRD OCTIVE KEY. IT COMES USEFUL IN FAST PIECES THAT HAVE A RUN OF HIGH NOTES. BUT WITHOUT THE THIRD OCTIVE KEY YOU CAN STILL REACH ALL THE NOTES YOU COULD WITH A THIRD OCTIVE KEY IT'S JUST MORE KEYS YOU HAVE TO PRESS DOWN. IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY AND ARE GOING TO COLLAGE TO STUDY MUSIC I'D SAY TO BUY IT OR SOMETHING COMPARABLE TO THAT OBOE.
HOPE I'VE BEEN USEFUL,
CAITLIN

I have seen the posting of this loree oboe on ebay since a few months ago. That means it has been put up for auctin again and again for several times without buyer. But it doesn't mean that it is not a good oboe. You may ask the seller if there is any return policy after a trial period , say 10 days.

Thanks for your opinion guys, and asking about a trial period sounds like a good idea. It may just be that its pretty pricy and thats why its not selling, but who knows!

i definitely wouldn't recommend buying on ebay, as its not very secure (and you want to be secure when buying something that is that expensive)

check out rdgwoodwinds.com
netinstruments.com
usedoboes.com

and just google "used oboes"

as for that oboe, F. Loree is a respectable brand and about 80% of professionals use them. however, there are some other respectable brands out there such as Laubin, Howarth, Marigaux, Hiniker, Covey, and others. So search around, try a couple out, and see which you like more.

I'm personally more partial to Laubins, although it depends on your taste. some feel it is too heavy.

I just tryed several pro. oboes. Wound up buying a new model 800 Fox. It is a very fine piece. maybe the next Fox wouldent be as good ,maybe I lucked out on a good one . not all the same oboes are the same.I compared it to Loree, Covey, Yamaha,Patricola. Laubin.Buffet.

The current price for that oboe seems very high to me. The reason being that the serial number BA.. is from the late 50s or early 60s. The rule of thumb is that you take the current price for a new Loree and subtract $100 for every year old the oboe is. That puts the price at about $1000 -- unless the oboe is really something special, I wouldn't think it would be worth more than $2500. $3000 at most.
Instead why don't you contact a reputable reseller like Midwest Musical Imports, the McFarland Oboe Shop, or someplace else where there are oboe players on staff who can pick something out that would be worth the money. I've bought good new oboes from both of those places.

One more thing. Why don't you try to contact a local professional oboist. He or she might help you select an instrument or may know of a good oboe that's coming up for sale. With only one more year to go before graduation, I don't think it's wise to spend much money on an oboe -- only to have your college oboe teacher recommend that you buy something else. If you already know where you'll be going to school, why not call the oboe teacher there and get a recommendation from him or her?

If you are serious about buying a new instrument contact Peter Hurd at this website:
http://oboes.us/
He is very knowledgable and fair in his prices. Good luck.

wow thats really funny. i believe i know the man who overhauled that oboe because the picture looks like its outside of his house. he the best ww repair person in miami where i live. i remember wanting to buy an oboe and he told me he had 2 lorees that he was in the process of overhauling.

the guy's name is juan novo, and hes very good. its actually really funny that its the same one, small world huh.

i could be wrong though, but i wouldn't be surprised if it was the same oboe i played. which btw, i didn't care for it that much, although my standards are quite high. i ended up buying a used laubin which i love
