Just one quick question, if someone wouldn't mind. I will be learning (or attempting ) to play the Oboe soon (2-3 weeks time or so) and I have read that you need to soak "cane" part of the reed. However, I am not a woodwinds player (yet ) so I don't quite know which part exactly that is (although I have a pretty good guess). So basically, I want to know which part I am soaking.

Take a look at this picture and tell me if I'm right:

May seem kind of lame to you guys but hey, we've all got to start somewhere

Thanks!

You sure are right! Learning oboe can be a little confusing at first and there are always new things to learn. I've been playing oboe for four years now and I'm going to try to learn how to adjust my reeds so they play better and how to make my own.

I'm sorry if that scared you. Really and truly, oboe is a rewarding instrument! After all those long hours you spend learning it, the beautiful sound that comes out of the instrument is utterly amazing. I'm glad you've decided to learn! And good luck! :D

Be sure you have a TEACHER - an oboist, not a general band director - VERY IMPORTANT!! There are issues with the oboe which are not understood by others so go to someone who can really help you.

about what "oboeteacher" said, I have a general band teacher that played the tuba as a kid, but she memorized all the insturments. She is a great help to me and the other oboe player in my band.
