Hi, im a bassoonist through and through, but i REFUSE to march with my bassoon for fear of impaling myself. i was just wondering how interchangable bassoon and oboe are. i love both sound qualities and just was wondering if anyone knew if any aspects of them are similar. ie. Embochure, fingering, ( i know for a fact that the breathing is different). anyway, just wanted to know about oboes, i mean: double reeds gotta stick together right?

Hi bassonist!
I LOVE the bassoon sound. i think it's one of my favorite instruments besides the oboe =P. If i could play the bassoon, then i would, but i can't =P. I have no idea what the similarities or differences are, but i think i've heard someone say that the oboe embouchure compared to the bassoon embouchure is more fixed and tight? i think the bassoon emboucure is more relaxed and stuff. don't count on me on this fact. definately the bassoon fingerings are more far apart than the oboe =P. I've met a bassoon player who started off as an oboe player before, so if you wanted to make that switch, then i guess it IS possible...

Dear High_School_Bassoonist200,

I play the oboe and the Bassoon(As you can probably tell by my username). I actually played oboe first and then started bassoon. Since you will have played the bassoon first and then switched to the oboe, I don't know what the transition will be like for you. As for the embouchure, they are pretty much the same except you play with less reed in your mouth on the oboe. Also, the style of blowing is a little bit different. As for the fingerings, the oboe is easy. I thought that the bassoon fingerings were a lot harder. So that won't be an issue.
But the best way to figure out the similarities is to just try an oboe.

Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm positive that you'll be able to transition.
The useual transition is oboe->English Horn.

Honestly, I would pick an easy instrument like flute to double on, but if you feel like learning oboe, all the more power to you
