I`m a clarinetist/saxophonist and i`m going to music camp this summer. There are electives in the day and one of them is beginning oboe. But there might be free time to just do whatever, should i start oboe or take the free time to practice or something.

hey,
i don`t think oboe would be that bad of an idea....but practicing is a good idea too.....oboe`s cool, its nice when people decide to try it. usually it sticks....good luck on what you decide....

It depends on what you want to do with the oboe in the future. If you want to play it in school, sure, maybe it`s a good idea. BUT--if you pick up another instrument and keep playing the clarinet, you`re going to double the amount of time you`ll be spending practicing for the rest of your playing career.

If you`re not a very good clarinetist yet (say you`re in middle school), then I wouldn`t do it--concentrate on the clarinet and get proficient before trying another instrument. But if you`re in high school and you`re already a good clarinetist, you might think about trying it. If you don`t like it, you`d only have to put up with it for the summer. And if you do like it, you could think about switching.

obeo is one of my favorite instruments and i`ve always wanted to play it. I`m in middle school but i play in a band where we play university level music,so i think i could handle it, i`m not in any other activitise like sports, so i have extra time to pratice. As soon as i pick up a instrument, i will usually stick to it. the only bas thing is that we don`t have any oboes in are band,so i can`t realy play it in band or anything. But if worst comes to worst, I`ll definitly stick with my clarinet.

NO! Do not pick up the oboe. If you are playing the Saxophone it will screw up the embouchure. For both isntruments Saxophone and Oboe requires a different embouchure. So if you do plan to take the oboe seriously or the Saxophone I would choose one and stick with that. Hope this helps!
