3 causes for exhaustion:
1. Bad Embouchure (biting, tense)
2. Bad Breath Support (your abdominal muscles should be at work)
3. Bad Reeds (resistant, overly hard, old reeds do not make oboe a joy)

3 Cures:
1. Rather than think of top to bottom on the reed, think side to side. Pull in the sides of your lips by making an "eww" formation, let your jaw drop. You want to have full support of your lips without strain in those teethy areas. No biting!

2. A.Take a deep breath and let your chest expand. When you exhale, keep you chest expanded. Then practice breathing in so that you air flows down deep to where your tummy and even your sides will push out from air, like a balloon. That is a proper breathing.
B. Just below your rib cage and above your belly button are your abs and your abdomincal muscles should be at work when you exhale your breath. Try blowing air at your finger normally and then try to force your air out with your abdominal muscles so that you get a good strong fast stream of air. By using your abs rather than over using your throat and lips you will find a great deal of improvement in your tone, lyrical flow of your playing, and an easier time playing, period!

3. Bad Reeds... well your reeds should only be lasting you 3 weeks MAX unless you have a teacher around adjusting your reeds to death. It would be helpful to find a teacher near you that could supply decent handmade reeds or to at least show you how you can adjust reeds for proper playing and to prolong life. Do also seek out handmade reed makers online, here's a listing: http://www.oboeinsight.com/stories/storyReader$449 .

Best of luck. The oboe is only an ill wind to those who never learn to play it correctly.

actually the point is not embouchure, neither reeds (my teachers makes em, i am very pleased with em) nor breathing. its just after a long time of playing :D
look: sometimes rehearsals dont seem to end, you practice for about... lets say 3-4 hours. unfortunately i do not have the time to practice 3-4 hours a day.
so i thought there might be a possibility to relax the muscles ...
but thanks though!!

Not really, I can not practice for a week and still practice for 3 hours.

What muscles can one be building up in your lips? Do oboists have muscular lips? Certainly oboists are also not developing callouses in the lips.

Once one learns proper embouchure and breath control, while also using good reeds playing it is easy to play for a long time.

There IS an issue where neglect (over a week of non-practice) can negatively impact endurance, that's because all your skills go down and when you try to make immediate demands of them all at once you crash.

What is helpful after a long break is to warm up slowly and gradually and then one can continue playing for a couple hours. Work on long tones and make sure you are properly supporting your air and that you are not straining your lips or biting, go on to slur excercises, and then to some etudes, then music.

If you attempt to play music at full steam even on a flute after 2 weeks, there is going to be pain.

(flutists do face embouchure pain too, but only with neglect &/or smiley embouchures)

3 weeks if you practice an hour a day. Less so if you practice more. I think long 2+ hour sessions will kill a reed within 1-2 weeks or even a few days.

The oboe reed from the time you start playing starts to close. Usually what happens is you start with a very resonant low range and hard to reach high range (without squeezing a brand new reed), but as the reed closes the high range will become easier to sound and the low range will usually be ok until the 2nd-3rd week. Toward the end of the reeds life the lowest octave starts to die off and eventually the whole reed just become unresponsive and resistant.

One can re-refine the reed to remove resistance so that it can continue playing after 2-3wks, but the reed will have a limited low range unless one were to also tie a wire on it to force the reed to stay open. However people don't like wires in the USA (Rico flashbacks, lol).

a professional oboist most likely goes through about 2-3 reeds a week

I would get a softer reed. The brand of the reed also matters. I think James' reeds are very very challenging to play due to the slit down the side of the reed. Emerald closes up too much. I don't know what brand of reed to play either... please tell me!!
